When we think of the word “still” we automatically think to do nothing; no motion. However, every day we make plans; plans to shop, plans to run errands, plans to handle business etc. God is not bothered by our planning or desire to be organized. But sometimes God will step in the middle of our plans and change the direction/path. So, when we speak of “Still” we speak of each of us having the ability to change or silence our own plan and move in God’s direction. Secondly the word “Still” in this context refer to being sensitive to hear God’s small “still” voice. Ultimately our purpose in 2024 is to develop a greater ability to move in God’s direction/path in the middle of our own plans and to become more sensitive to God’s small still voice (I Kings 19:11-12).

You make a plan to go to the grocery store. You have a list with 4 items. You get in your car and a still quiet voice tells you to go a different grocery store which truly is out of the way and will take more time. Your spirit knows that this voice is not your own. You move according to that leading and discover later that there was an emergency on your regular route and you would have been severely inconvenienced. In addition, the items you needed were out of stock at the store you were originally headed to. This is an example where your own thoughts and plans were “still” and you moved in the direction of God who had a better plan for you.

Let’s say you prepared to buy tickets to a stage performance. A still voice tells you “Do not purchase a ticket.” Later you discover that the performance was cancelled and people had a terrible experience with a refund.

Often, we have examples of God attempting to guide us but our own plans, thoughts, and desires are so loud that we miss His still small voice.
